Wisdom Tooth Extraction – Advice from Oral Surgeons

dca-blog_oral-surgery-three-people

Impacted wisdom teeth can sometimes be removed by your general dentist, but if the task is too complicated, you may be referred to an oral surgeon. At your consultation, your surgeon will look at your X-rays, examine your mouth and ask you questions about your medical history. Once a treatment plan is established, you can discuss the details of the procedure. By the time you leave, you should know what type of anesthesia you will receive, how long the surgery will last and what to expect during recovery. In most cases, the extraction is performed as an outpatient procedure.

Preparing for Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Your oral surgeon will give you a list of instructions that detail what you should do before and after the surgery. Follow these carefully to ensure the best results. In most cases, you’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from the clinic on your surgery date. Be sure to ask your oral surgeon if it is safe to take your prescription and over-the-counter medications before surgery. If you are receiving anesthesia or IV sedation, you may need to avoid eating and drinking before the procedure.

Extracting the Wisdom Tooth

During wisdom tooth extraction, your oral surgeon will make an incision into your gum tissue to expose the tooth. Bones blocking access to the tooth may be removed. If necessary, the tooth will be divided into pieces to make it easier to extract. Once the tooth is removed from its socket, the surgeon will clean the area, and stitch the wound closed if needed.

7 Post-Surgery Tips

Most oral surgeons suggest the following guidelines for post-surgical, at-home care.

  1. Minor bleeding is expected. Replace gauze pads as instructed by your oral surgeon.
  2. Take it easy for the rest of the day after your surgery.
  3. Eat only soft foods until you can tolerate a normal diet.
  4. Don’t drink from a straw for at least a week.
  5. Don’t brush, floss, or use mouthwash.
  6. Take your pain medicine as directed.
  7. Do not smoke or use tobacco for at least a week.

Minor discomfort and swelling are normal after surgery. Call your dentist or oral surgeon if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, lasting numbness, bleeding from your nose or fever.
